According to a study of National Heart and Lung Institute of Imperial College London, moderate red wine consumption can combat chronic pulmonary diseases. Although it’s well known red wine gives multiples health benefits -thanks to it high amount of antioxidants, which also helps to keep a healthy heart- this study reveals this drink could fight some diseases like pulmonary emphysema, chronic bronchitis and even asthma, because of a red wine key component known as resveratrol, a phytoestrogen which also could have an anticancer preventive effect.
To perform this study, fluid samples of the lungs of fifteen smokers and fifteen patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were isolated. Then resveratrol was added to this samples and immediately interleukin 8 –chemical that causes inflammations of the lungs- production decreased. In the case of smokers this chemical was reduced by 94%, while in patients with lung problems it decreased by 88%.
There is no doubt a red wine moderate drinking can be a great alternative to fight a disease that kills almost three million person every year.
